On-the-Job Training
In South Carolina, On-the-Job Training (OJT) in barbering is a state-recognized pathway that allows individuals to complete required training hours within a licensed barbershop rather than a traditional school. Overseen by the South Carolina Board of Barber Examiners, OJT programs must be properly registered and follow a structured curriculum under the supervision of a licensed professional or instructor. Trainees gain real, hands-on experience working with clients in a live shop environment while completing and documenting a total of 1,920 required training hours for barber licensure.
OJT provides a more practical, experience-driven approach to entering the industry, combining technical skill development with real-world client interaction and shop workflow. While more flexible than classroom-based education, it maintains the same standards and oversight to ensure trainees are fully prepared for state board examinations and long-term professional success.
New hires are paired with senior operators who guide daily tasks, answer questions, and provide continuous feedback.
